Does Pi = 4? Have we gotten the whole Pi thing wrong?
I don't know.
I wanted to try out my editing skills so I made this video. It's only 90 seconds long, but it too like three days to make. Thanks for watching!

Slightly simpler explanation. A circle is not made up of infinitesimally small line segments. It is a set of points, all of which are exactly equidistant from the center. The foldy thing with the square cannot ever get all the points exactly equidistant. There will always be tiny little line segments that can be added up to the perimeter of the square. A circle doesn’t have those line segments. To say that the circle has the same perimeter as a square with sides equal to the circle’s diameter ignores a fundamental principle of circles.

Well, technically on the computer this is wrong, bc everything is formed by pixel, meaning that it it’s possible to make a circle out of folding a square, bc technically, it’s not even a perfect circle, the best way to show that you can’t make a perfect circle folding a square, is to do it irl, where therefore it can be a perfect circle, but your explanation itself, was perfect, and showed that you can’t fold a square into a circle, just wanted to point out that, in things like your computer it is possible, bc technically circles aren’t even possible to exist thx to pixels

The explonation is wrong. Every formula that has to do something with a circle or a shape that has arc in it is based of approximation. If you are taking infinity into account you will get infinitly accurate approximation. Thanks to Newton and Leibitz. If the little lines that looks like a staircase were infinitly small you couldn't zoom in to see it as lines. It would take forever. That is not the reason this method is wrong. It is wrong because the more it get closer to the shape of the circle only the area is getting closer to the circle's area, but the as a path it is acting less like the path of the circle. Infinite amount of 90 degree turning is nothing like moving on a circle. Therefore this new shape is not a circle. Therefore we shouldn't assue it has any common properties with a circle without proof.

@th0rrr not really, I mean if you do the limit it is possible to prove that the points on the border of the square do converge on the border of the circle, just not in a way such that their perimeter decreases. As I said before the zigzag argument is really bad as you can prove that in certain cases it does work (like in the n-gone). Try to work that out and you'll see you get it gives the correct result
th0rrr
th0rrr Πριν 3 μήνες
@Emanuele Troiani the thing is: even if we set it to infinity it still shouldn't really change anything just like the previous steps (shown in the video) didn't change anything. if it was possible to zoom in on infinity it should still be the zigzag line next to the straight line (just infinitely small)
Emanuele Troiani
Emanuele Troiani Πριν 3 μήνες
@th0rrr well first of all he didn't prove that the perimeter of the square is bigger than the perimeter of the circle in the first place. That being said the zooming in argument is misreading and clearly not rigorous. For example I could inscribe a regular n-gone in the circle and take the limit of n to infinity: the perimeter of the n-gone would converge to that of the circle, still at any finite n you would get the same visual result as that in the video. What should have been said is that (probably in a more fun whay that I am doing now): We call a_n the perimeter of the n-th "modified square" in the sequence of the video, having a regular square for n=0, then: 1) we prove that a_0 is bigger than the perimeter of the circle 2) we prove that for all n, a_n = a_0 3) we conclude that this implies that the sequence a_n does not converge to the circumference of the circle. tl,dr: I could object that 1) In no point we have proven that the two shapes have different perimeters and 2) the limit argument is not necessarily flawed as it is exposed as the discrete to continuum limit is all over the place in math and physics (and works for the area btw)
th0rrr
th0rrr Πριν 3 μήνες
how? its clearly completely different. with the very close to the circle version of the square zoomed in it basically has a zigzag line while the circle is a straight line aaaaand surprise a zigzag line is longer than a straight line
